Can You Know The Truth about Your Spirituality?

Spirituality:

Relativism:

Something that in ecclesiastical law belongs to the church or to a cleric as such; sensitivity or attachment to religious values; the quality or state of being spiritual

A view that ethical truths depend on the individuals and groups holding them

Yes, you can know the truth, but only if you seek the truth!

Several years ago, I wrote about this subject, but now more than ever this discussion is needed.

Writing about spirituality can be a sensitive issue for some but that doesn’t make the topic any less important. The oppression we know as political correctness has hindered full engagement of this subject. By not writing about it, we deny each other access to answers that will bring resolution to our true purpose in life.

Let me be clear. I am not talking about the humanistic, watered-down version of spirituality that typically refers to core values and unspecific beliefs; I am referring to the foundational beliefs on which all our lives exist and function.

Here is the reality. Confirming and determining your true calling and purpose in your life means going on a personal quest to find answers about your spirituality!

The objective of this information is to expand, confirm, or challenge your thinking about your spirituality. The truth will set you free—only if you seek to know it. Approaching this subject with an investigative and inquisitive mindset is important to the process. Of course in the end, you will make your own personal choice.

Our lives operate under natural laws and truths. Regardless of our opinions about these laws, the laws do not change. One example is gravity. Just because we don’t understand it or even accept it doesn’t mean gravity doesn’t exist. When people believed the world was flat, their collective opinion did not make it so.

This principle of natural laws and truth equally applies to spirituality. Personal relativism (deciding what spiritual truth or law is) applies no more to spirituality than it does the science of gravity. Our focus should be on discovering spiritual truth, not in creating it—because no one can create spiritual truth.

If an individual truly believes all truth and life guidelines are relative, that idea condones all human conduct and behavior. How? After all, I get to decide what is right and wrong—not you or society.

In some countries, women are killed for looking at a man the wrong way, whatever that means. If you embrace relativism, you must also allow the killing and mutilation of children in Africa. As some tribes teach "if you are not part of my tribe, your life does not matter."

Relativism also applies to white collar activities. I can earn a billion dollars a year as a Wall Street CEO, even though my company lost money. I can bribe government officials, threaten authorities, have sex with a minor, and so on—you get the point.

Yes, they are extreme examples but you can’t apply conditions to relativism. That is in direct contradiction to the meaning of the word.

The status of our spiritual compass (or lack of one) in our global community—especially in the developed countries—is reflected in the self-centered, arrogant, boastful, slanderous, ungrateful, unforgiving, treacherous, conceited, disobedient, and selfish lovers of self—the godlessness of the inhabitants.

But don’t take my word for it. Single parenthood is at its highest in history. Teen pregnancy in North America—4 out of 10 girls will be pregnant at least once before age 20. School and work-related shootings are becoming commonplace; lawsuits and reasons for lawsuits are plentiful; terror-related incidents are frequent.

So where do you place your hope?

Last month a study was released on the factors that most influenced the happiness (lack of worry) and fulfillment of 8-to-12 year olds. Contrary to the researchers’ premise, it was not a two-parent family, higher income levels, or physical health. The happiest kids had faith in God. With a capital "G."

Children with faith were the most content and well adjusted. Their faith was even more important than the number of parents raising them. Their spirituality provided hope, grounding, and well—being beyond their circumstances.

In the upcoming separate section, I will share my personal journey on this topic. But I realize all individuals should be respected as they go through their spiritual search process. Each journey is intensely personal, even though the destination is the same—to arrive at a place of Spiritual Truth.

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of listening to a brilliant mathematician and scientist who took the time to calculate the implications of the theory of evolution. His presentation documented the fact that it’s mathematically unfeasible to have all origins of life come from a single point, as is suggested by some.

From his research, he found that evolution required genetic mutations and progress of such magnitude, it is simply not possible. In addition, he pointed out that current science reveals most species that mutate die out. (Mutations are required for this theory to be fulfilled.) Even Darwin refuted his own theory of evolution prior to his death.

This month, an atheist group placed ads on buses: There’s probably no god. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.

Everyone has a position on the subject.

So now what? How can you know the truth?
Finding is reserved for those who seek.

Are you ready to seek?

I realize it is a privilege that you let me into your space each month with this ezine, so I don’t want to be seen as abusing this honor. On the other hand, avoiding controversial topics is not my style nor should it be yours. In the next section, I will share my spiritual truths.
