The 10,000-Hour Rule of Mastery!

Mastery: The authority of a master; possession or display of great skill or technique; skill or knowledge that makes one master of a subject

Have you ever heard this . . . ?
"It took me 10 years to become an overnight success."

How long does it take you and others to become a master in your field?

1. New research by Malcom Gladwell suggests that no matter your discipline, it takes a consistent time of around 10,000 hours or 20 hours a week for 10 years to achieve mastery. That 20 hours means you are actually engaged in your craft, not just thinking about it. From music and medicine to lawyers, leadership, and sports, the career choice did not matter. It still takes at least 10,000 hours to become competent. He confirmed success is not an accident—it takes focused effort.

I recall when I was in my late 20s and just beginning my career as a speaker, consultant, and author, I was certain it would be different for me. I was confident it would not take me a decade to become an overnight success. But in spite of my best efforts, my mastery and proficiency did not arrive until I was in my 40s—oddly enough, about 10,000+ hours later.

There is much to be learned by that revelation.

When a younger person, I was naively critical that all the best corporate positions were filled by old people (for the record, anyone over 40). But looking back, many people don't know what they don't know and I was one of them.

Why does every single sport have a development program or farm team? It takes time to advance. Yes, there are exceptions, but very few. Hockey in Canada starts when the child can barely walk, then progresses to rep teams, junior teams, senior amateur, professional farm teams, then the NHL. When Michael Phelps set all the all-time record of 8 gold medals, it was his third round at the Olympics. Did he improve during the 8 years between his first Olympics and his third? Obviously!

Most car racers spent time in go-karts, starting around the age of 8, then if good enough, progressed through the various levels of racing.

So why would business, leadership, and your responsibilities at work be any different? They are not. To prove my point, watch Oprah when she first began her talk show career compared to today. WOW! What a difference!

During the dot com craze, I recall being in a meeting with an organization run by a 26-year-old. Even though he was burning a million a month in seed capital and was immature in his leadership style and managerial capabilities, he was certain he was God's gift to leadership/management. The company closed forever a few months later. He had not put in his time (10,000 hours) to develop his skills.

Do we have a society and career development mindset that embraces a 10-year timeframe to become excellent at what we do? No. Our obsession with immediacy abounds.

What about you? Do you have the patience to focus and put in the time to achieve a level of mastery? The most recent job-related stats suggested that most individuals (in the developed world) will have 12 to 15 jobs in their lifetime.

How can we realize excellence if we don’t work long enough to get good at what we do?

We must become concerned that with 12 jobs in your lifetime, you end up being average at everything and really good at nothing.

2. A second critical element that leads to success in individuals is a supportive environment. Claims like I am a self-made millionaire are rarely true, they almost always had surroundings that encouraged their success.

Other things to think about:

  • Having numerous jobs in different roles suggests a person has mastered none.
  • Mastery requires real time. There simply is no replacement for experience.
  • Patience is a baseline to your success.
  • If you never master anything in your entire life, you will never feel the deep level of fulfillment that comes from mastering a discipline.
  • Research confirms that each person must take responsibility for the intentional direction of his or her life. Rabbit tripping (being scattered and unfocused) has no value except to exclude what you don't like.
  • To avoid rabbit tripping means knowing your passions and purpose sooner than later in life. Use My Source EXPERIENCE Journal™. to help you and your team discover where you need to focus to understand your purpose. If you want to achieve true success, you must operate in your passion and purpose, which means you reduce your wandering or stop it entirely.
  • If you are a leader, coach, or career or HR professional, this principle applies to the development of your team. Long-term development plans and timelines should be your norm, along with mentoring and support. Or hire someone who has already paid the price for their success.
To become a person or an organizations that is living on purpose, stay grounded and make smart and careful decisions.

What´s New?

We soon will be launching the new CRG Corporate Learning Center (CLC).

  • You may set up and administer your own Corporate Learning Center and create groups, as required.
  • You may place assessments into individual's or group's easily, from your control panel.
  • You have the option of various permission levels, depending on the individual and your groups. For example, a manager can see her results plus the results of her staff, but the staff can view only their personal results.
  • You can confirm if and when an individual has completed his or her results and review those results, with permission.
  • You can access your CLC through your privately co-branded landing page. No other CRG navigation is present and your company logo headlines the page.

Plus much more.

The CLC requires a subscription, based on the number of participants. Pricing details will be announced soon.

Ken Keis, President and CEO of CRG International, Inc., was interviewed by Profit Magazine for their January 2009 entrepreneurial issue.
