Succeeding in Challenging Times!
|
Challenge: |
To demand as due or deserved; to dispute especially as being unjust, invalid, or outmoded; to confront or defy boldly; to invite into competition; to arouse or stimulate especially by presenting with difficulties |
When you face challenging times, do you tend to quit or do you decide to embrace the opportunities before you?
You have a choice about the way you respond to your circumstances.
What about your organization?
Will it wither or will it grow as a result of the recent shift in economic conditions?
Traditionally, up to one third of businesses grow during an economic downturn—thus not only can you survive—you can thrive!
When times are good, there is more flexibility to tolerate inefficiencies and just average performance from individuals, teams, and organizations. Of course when economic conditions shift, the opposite is true. That is when you turn up your development of individuals to maximize performance—not lower it, as many organizations will want to do.
Here are some strategies to consider.
- Determine who can contribute best to your plans and objectives.
- Verify the makeup of your core team.
- Identify the people who are not reflecting the competence, values, and skills you need at this time.
- Project the impact of the loss of unproductive staff. Is it manageable?
- What will happen to the people still working at the company, when those unproductive people are gone? Do cross-training processes and gaps need to be addressed?
- Make decisions to keep or trim your team based on actual performance.
- Be smart by not incurring unnecessary new expenses.
- Review all your input costs to verify you are receiving the best value for your investment. Remember: The lowest cost is not always the best choice. You want quality and value for the best investment.
- Conduct a Return on Investment (ROI) analysis on each person and each initiative.
- Equip your core team members with the knowledge and skills required to optimize their performance.
- Be clear about your expectations from each team member and the team in terms of deliverables.
- Have each person concur with the expectations you have for him or her—and sign off on the agreed deliverables.
- Include an accountability process that is specific to each person.
More than ever, you want team members who are
- playing to their strengths,
- passionate about their roles and responsibilities, and
- good at what they do.
"I have seniority"; "I need to put in my time"; and "I require a paycheck" are attitudes you definitely don't want from your success-team members.
Rely upon proven resources to help your organization focus on strengths and performance.
- Have each person complete the Personal Style Indicator (PSI) so people will understand their strengths and weaknesses in relationship to their responsibilities.
- Use the Job Style Indicator (JSI) to confirm the best working style to fulfill each job or role in your organization.
- Compare the Job Style of each position with people's Personal Style scores to confirm the Job against their Personal Style Compatibility. If the role and the person are not style-compatible long term, no amount of training or development will optimize their performance or create a sustainable engaging position for them.
- You might want to consider the Stress Indicator and Health Planner to track how individuals are coping when stress levels are heightened. Some will handle stress better than others. Don't avoid this important issue.
- Use My Source EXPERIENCE Journal™ to help individuals discover where they need to focus to understand their purpose. To feel fulfilled, people must believe in and connect with what they are doing.
Many experts have commented that in challenging economic times, fear and group-panic add to the downturn.
The key is not to be fearful. Trust in yourself. Stay grounded, make smart and careful decisions, and decide that—based on your strategic approach—you will be one of the 30% of organizations that thrive in challenging times.
And don't let anyone tell you different! |
